Mary Dougherty – B.S. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
About this Alum
Hometown: Colorado Springs
Degree(s) obtained at Mines: B.S. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Favorite Memory from Mines: Finishing hard exams and going home or out to eat snacks and drink fancy beverages with my friends. The camaraderie at Mines is so far unmatched by anything else I’ve done.
Hobbies: Baking, yoga, kickboxing, casual video games, karaoke, and sleeping in
Advice to Students: Just do it! Lean into the discomfort and do the scary thing, you’ll figure it out. You’re smart, capable, and interesting, and new experiences help build a network of skills and ideas to draw on in the future. You’ll also meet people who have different hobbies and experiences than you do, which is invaluable.
Do the cool things you can manage, and try to push into opportunities to make things, like bladesmithing, glassblowing, or robotics. Making something is an excellent opportunity to flex some creative thinking, feel a tangible end result, and make your own coolest trinkets and knick-knacks.
